CE certification for power adapters
Speaking of Power adapter As you’re likely familiar, power adapters are a common component in our daily lives. They are frequently used with portable devices such as laptops and smartphones. When exporting power adapters to the European Union, CE certification is required. So, what tests are typically involved?
 CE certification
Power adapters typically undergo CE certification, including compliance with the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC), as well as European energy efficiency certification (ErP) and RoHS.
The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) applies to all electrical equipment whose rated operating voltage ranges from 50 to 1,000 V AC or from 75 to 1,500 V DC. This definition specifies the scope of the directive’s applicability, rather than imposing limitations on its use—for example, in a computer operating at 230 V AC, any hazards arising from 12 V DC circuits are also subject to the LVD’s requirements. The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive ensures that systems and equipment can function properly within their electromagnetic environment without causing interference to other systems or equipment.
European certification for power adapters also requires compliance with the European Energy Labeling Regulation (ERP). Power adapters are classified as energy‑consuming products, meaning they operate by drawing energy input—such as electricity, fossil fuels, or renewable fuels—and encompass market‑available products used to generate, transmit, or measure that energy. This category further includes standalone components that consume energy, as well as components integrated within electrical appliances.
The CE marking does not indicate that a product was manufactured within the EEA; rather, it signifies that the product has been assessed prior to being placed on the market. This means the product complies with the legal requirements applicable in that market. It also implies that the manufacturer has verified that the product meets all relevant essential requirements, such as health and safety standards.
CE certification As a regulatory framework for product safety certification in the European Union, products may only be placed on the EU market if they comply with the relevant CE directives.
