UL is the abbreviation for Underwriter Laboratories Inc. UL Safety Laboratories is the most authoritative safety testing and certification organization in the United States and one of the largest independent private institutions worldwide engaged in safety testing and certification. It is an independent, for‑profit professional organization dedicated to public safety. UL employs scientific testing methods to evaluate whether various materials, devices, products, equipment, and structures pose risks to life and property, and to determine the extent of such risks. It also develops, publishes, and disseminates relevant standards and informational resources aimed at reducing and preventing losses to life and property, while conducting fact‑based research and investigations. UL certification in the United States is non‑mandatory; it primarily focuses on testing and certifying product safety performance and does not cover a product’s electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics.
In summary, it primarily engages in product safety certification and business‑operation safety‑assurance services, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that the market receives products meeting an appropriate level of safety and contributing to the protection of personal health and property. As an effective means of removing technical barriers to international trade, UL also plays a proactive role in fostering the growth of global commerce.
Development History
UL was founded in 1894. In its early years, UL relied on funding from fire insurance companies to sustain its operations, and it did not achieve full independence until 1916. Over nearly a century of development, UL has become a globally recognized certification body, equipped with a comprehensive and rigorous organizational management system, as well as standardized procedures for standard development and product certification. UL is governed by a board of directors comprising representatives from safety experts, government officials, consumers, the education sector, public utilities, the insurance industry, and standards organizations, while day-to-day operations are managed by the president and vice presidents. Currently, UL maintains five laboratories within the United States, with its headquarters located in Northbrook, a town north of Chicago, and has also established corresponding laboratories in Taiwan, Suzhou, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong.
Listed
In general, listing applies only to complete products and to various components and devices that qualified personnel may replace or install on-site. Products covered under UL Listing Services include household appliances, medical equipment, computers, commercial equipment, and a wide range of electrical products used in buildings—such as power distribution systems, fuses, wires, switches, and other electrical components. Products that have been listed by UL are typically permitted to bear the UL Listing Mark on each unit, along with instructions for its proper use.
Recognized
Recognition services are one of UL’s service offerings; the products certified under this program may only be used as components or raw materials in UL‑listed, classified, or other recognized products. Recognized products are not structurally complete or are subject to certain usage restrictions to ensure they meet the intended safety performance requirements. In most cases, the follow‑up services for recognized products fall under Category R. Products in Category L include electronic wire (AVLV2), processed wire (ZKLU2), wire harnesses (ZPFW2), aluminum wire (DVVR2), and metallic flexible conduit (DXUZ2). Recognized products must bear the UL Recognition Mark.
