What are the fundamental concepts of switch-mode power adapters?

发布时间:2020-06-13

Switching power adapter It is closely tied to everyday life, finding applications in numerous electronic devices and serving as an indispensable component of modern electronics. It boasts stable performance, low heat generation, compact size with excellent heat dissipation, and high efficiency. At the same time, it is a common item in daily use—for example, it’s employed in laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, and portable music players. As a small, portable power‑conversion device, it features a compact design that makes it easy to carry, delivers reliable performance, and has a wide range of applications.

Next, we’ll provide a comprehensive overview of the advantages of switch-mode power adapters, helping you deepen your understanding of this technology.
1. Small size and lightweight
Switching power adapters do not use bulky mains-frequency transformers. Moreover, with the significantly reduced power dissipation in the switching MOSFETs, large heat sinks are no longer required.
2. Wide voltage regulation range
The output voltage of a switching power adapter is regulated by the duty cycle of the drive signal, while variations in the input voltage can be compensated through frequency modulation or pulse‑width modulation. As a result, even when the mains voltage fluctuates significantly, the adapter can still maintain a relatively stable output. Consequently, switching power adapters offer a wide regulation range and excellent voltage‑regulation performance. Moreover, there are two primary methods for adjusting the duty cycle: pulse‑width modulation and frequency modulation.
3. Low power consumption, high efficiency
In switch-mode power supply circuits, the switching MOSFET alternates between the on–off and off–on states under the drive of the control signal, with a very fast switching speed typically exceeding 50 kHz; in some advanced designs, switching frequencies can reach several hundred kilohertz or even near the megahertz range. This results in minimal power loss in the MOSFET, significantly improving the overall efficiency of the power supply, which can attain levels as high as 90%.
4. The filtering efficiency has been greatly improved, significantly reducing the capacitance and physical size of the filter capacitors.
The operating frequency of switch-mode power adapters currently typically exceeds 50 kHz—more than a thousand times that of linear regulator adapters—resulting in an almost thousandfold improvement in rectification‑and‑filtering efficiency. At the same output ripple voltage, the capacitance required for the filter capacitor in a switch-mode power supply is only about 1/500 to 1/1000 of that needed in a linear regulator.
