Power adapter manufacturers show you how to use power adapters safely.

When you’re not using the adapter, unplug it from the power outlet. Prolonged exposure to power can keep the adapter in a constant operating state, shortening its lifespan. In addition, pay special attention to the connection between the power cord and the adapter: avoid bending the cord at sharp angles, as this could cause it to break. Likewise, refrain from bending the adapter’s connector; doing so may result in poor contact. Although adapters are designed to operate across a wide voltage range—typically 100V to 240V—using them under unstable voltage conditions can still lead to damage.
As is well known, a laptop power adapter consists of two components: the adapter itself and the power cord with a connector that plugs into the laptop. When the adapter fails, it’s often sufficient to replace just that part, without needing to swap out the connector. The question then becomes: if two adapters are rated for the same voltage but have different output currents, can they be used interchangeably with the same laptop? The basic principle is this: an adapter with a higher rated current can safely replace one with a lower rated current.
 Power adapter
A laptop adapter is, in essence, a high-precision, highly efficient switching‑mode power supply. Its function is to convert 220V AC mains power into low‑voltage DC, providing stable power for the laptop’s normal operation; it is often referred to as the laptop’s “power source.” Because the adapter contains a switching power supply that operates under high voltage and high current conditions, it bears a heavy workload. Moreover, its fully enclosed design lacks cooling vents on the exterior and internal fans to aid heat dissipation, resulting in very high internal temperatures during operation. Especially in the sweltering summer months, the surface can feel scalding to the touch, while the internal temperature is even higher. Therefore, proper care and maintenance are essential during everyday office work and leisure activities.
Ensure effective heat dissipation. During hot summer days, you can place the power adapter on its side to facilitate airflow. When using your laptop in high‑temperature environments, set the power adapter in a well‑ventilated area out of direct sunlight. Avoid positioning the adapter near the laptop’s ventilation openings; otherwise, not only will heat fail to dissipate, but the adapter may also absorb additional heat as it increases its contact with the surrounding air, hindering efficient cooling. For even better thermal performance, consider placing a narrow plastic or metal spacer between the adapter and the desktop surface to enhance air convection around the adapter and accelerate heat removal.
All power supplies have a finite internal resistance. Consequently, when the supply delivers current, an internal voltage drop occurs, equal to the output current multiplied by the supply’s internal resistance. This voltage drop has two effects: first, it generates heat, proportional to the square of the output current times the internal resistance, causing the supply to warm up; second, it reduces the output voltage to the nominal value minus this internal drop, thereby lowering the available output. In typical designs, thermal management is taken into account by setting a maximum current limit. When the output current reaches this threshold, the output voltage is reduced to 95% of the nominal value—or another specified fraction—depending on the manufacturer and the specific requirements of the load. This current limit is referred to as the rated current.
If you notice that the power adapter becomes excessively hot, stop using it immediately. If it feels very hot even during brief use, the voltage and current of the adapter may differ significantly from those of your laptop’s original adapter. We recommend promptly checking the original adapter’s specifications for voltage and current. If there is a discrepancy, replace the adapter right away; otherwise, you could damage your computer and incur unnecessary losses.
