Methods for Reducing Excessive Temperature Rise in Switching Power Supply Adapters and Transformers

发布时间:2020-06-30

A model Switching power adapter From development and design through to deployment, engineers must not only ensure an aesthetically pleasing appearance but also verify the structural soundness of the switching power adapter. During operation, they must rigorously control the temperature rise to prevent excessive heat, which could otherwise reduce the adapter’s efficiency.
During the operation of switch-mode power adapters, excessive temperature in the power supply can be attributed primarily to two factors: first, the MOSFETs, and second, design-related issues inherent to the power supply itself. Next, we will examine these two aspects to determine how to address the temperature rise problem in switch-mode power adapters.

First, let’s analyze the MOSFET. In switch-mode power supply design, MOSFETs typically generate the most heat because they account for the highest losses. These losses can be attributed to two main factors: conduction losses and switching losses. Switching losses arise from the gate charge and the switching time. So how can we address this? We can reduce switching losses by selecting devices with faster switching speeds and shorter recovery times. As for conduction losses, we can minimize them by using MOSFETs with lower on‑state resistance. Of course, a well‑optimized design can also help cut losses—this largely depends on the engineer’s expertise. Next, let’s consider issues specific to the transformer. High temperatures in transformers usually stem from four primary causes: 1) poor winding techniques; 2) copper losses; 3) core losses; and 4) insufficient transformer power rating. Each of these can be addressed accordingly. Beyond these scenarios, another possibility is transformer aging, which may also lead to elevated operating temperatures.
