2021 marked a pivotal year for the development of 5G applications in China, as well as a critical phase in the global 5G race. As 5G base station deployment expands and the associated terminal ecosystem continues to diversify, 5G base station power supplies have also been steadily entering the market.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as of December 2020, China had built over 718,000 5G base stations. Globally, the total number of deployed 5G base stations has exceeded 1.02 million, and by the end of 2021, the worldwide total is expected to surpass 2.1 million. Meanwhile, China plans to build an additional 500,000 5G base stations.

On the 5G terminal user front, as of December 2020, the global total of 5G subscribers exceeded 225 million, with over 50 million new 5G subscribers added in the fourth quarter of last year. By the end of 2021, the number of 5G subscribers worldwide is expected to surpass 500 million, with China accounting for 400 million of those. By 2025, the global 5G subscriber base is projected to reach 3 billion, representing a penetration rate of 30%.
The road to 5G base station deployment remains long, and the power systems for these stations are being refined and upgraded as they are rolled out. China Tower has disclosed that the average power consumption of a 5G base station is more than three times that of a 4G base station, with annual electricity costs per station ranging from approximately RMB 23,000 to RMB 30,000.
To meet the 5G base station’s requirements for high power density and substantial power consumption, magnetic component manufacturers, semiconductor firms, and connector suppliers are all working diligently to enhance product quality as key components in power‑efficiency optimization.
To wear the crown, one must bear its weight. As China strives to lead the world in 5G base station technology and infrastructure development, the research and development of 5G base station power supplies remains a long and arduous journey, while innovation and cross‑industry collaboration in fundamental technologies—such as magnetic components, semiconductors, and connectors—are urgently needed.
