Xiaoshu (English name: Minor Heat) is one of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms and the fifth solar term of summer, marking the official start of the summer season. It falls between July 6 and July 8 on the Gregorian calendar each year, when the Sun reaches a celestial longitude of 105°.
The character “shu” denotes heat; ancient people believed that during the period of “Xiaoshu,” the year had not yet reached its peak temperature, hence the name. As a seasonal rhyme goes: “Xiaoshu is not truly hot; Dashi brings the three dog days.” This indicates that the hottest stretch of the year has begun, though it has not yet reached its absolute peak. As the saying goes, “The greatest heat lies in the Three Dog Days.” In China, the Three Dog Days typically begin 28 days after the summer solstice—what is known as “counting the first Fu from the third geng after the summer solstice.” From this point onward, crops across the country enter a phase of vigorous growth, calling for intensified field‑management efforts.
