Common issues with power adapters: Heating under normal operating conditions does not meet the required specifications.

Power adapter Its function is to change voltage. During voltage conversion, some electrical energy is lost as heat due to inefficiencies. Once this energy is converted into thermal energy, part of it is dissipated into the surrounding environment through radiation, convection, and conduction. The remaining heat is absorbed by the device itself, causing the power adapter’s temperature to rise. If the temperature exceeds the insulation material’s heat‑resistance limit, the insulation will age rapidly, shortening the product’s service life and compromising its safety. Therefore, a power adapter can operate safely and reliably only when its temperature is kept within an appropriate range.

Overvoltage at the output typically originates in the voltage‑regulation sampling and control circuitry. In a closed‑loop control system comprising the DC output, sampling resistors, an error‑amplifier such as the TL431, an optocoupler, and the power‑control IC, any malfunctioning component can lead to an elevated output voltage.

During supervision and spot inspections, it has been found that certain products exhibit excessively high temperature rises in their printed circuit boards and transformer windings under normal operating conditions, posing significant safety risks. As consumers, we should closely monitor the temperature rise of products during use. The simplest and most straightforward approach is to measure the temperature rise of the product’s enclosure while it is in operation. For power adapters, the difference between the enclosure temperature and the ambient temperature should not exceed 60°C. Even in hot summer weather, when the ambient temperature reaches 35°C, the enclosure temperature must remain below 95°C. If the temperature rise is too high, we should discontinue use promptly.
