U.S. Energy Efficiency Certification for Power Adapters – What Are DOE and CEC Certifications?

发布时间:2022-12-05

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issues DOE certification in accordance with U.S. energy‑efficiency regulations; this is the origin of DOE certification. CEC is the English abbreviation for the California Energy Commission. On December 30, 2005, the CEC issued an energy‑efficiency certification under California’s electronic and electrical equipment regulations—known as CEC certification.

Purpose of Certification:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issues DOE certification primarily to promote energy conservation and emission reduction, helping users save electricity and thereby lowering energy demand and mitigating the greenhouse effect. The latest DOE regulations require that all products falling within the scope of DOE certification must now meet the specified requirements. The California Energy Commission (CEC) certification is mainly aimed at improving the energy efficiency of electronic and electrical products, conserving energy, and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. CEC certification covers 58 major product categories; any product within this scope must comply with CEC requirements, or it may not be sold.

The benefits of certification are as follows:

DOE: For consumers, purchasing a product with DOE certification means it will consume less electricity than an uncertified product, helping to reduce energy costs. For the market in which it is sold, DOE certification contributes to energy savings, lowers carbon dioxide emissions, and mitigates the greenhouse effect, thereby helping to protect the environment. For manufacturers, it enhances the competitiveness of their products. CEC: For consumers, products that have obtained CEC certification naturally use less energy, leading to cost savings. For California, CEC certification helps the state as a whole conserve energy, cut carbon dioxide emissions, and curb the greenhouse effect. For manufacturers, it ensures smooth market access in California and strengthens the competitiveness of their products.

These two certifications essentially reflect the differences between the U.S. (DOE) and California (CEC). However, they are typically pursued together, since products sold in the U.S. will almost certainly also be available in California.
