 ETL certification

Certification mark

ETL is short for Electrical Testing Laboratories, an American testing laboratory. Founded in 1896 by the renowned American inventor Thomas Edison, ETL enjoys a very high reputation both in the United States and worldwide. Like UL and CSA, ETL can issue the ETL certification mark based on either UL standards or U.S. national standards; it can also issue a combined certification mark that complies with UL/U.S. national standards as well as CSA/Canadian standards. The “US” symbol in the lower right corner indicates applicability in the United States, while the “C” in the lower left corner denotes applicability in Canada; when both “US” and “C” are present, the mark is valid in both countries.

Why do overseas customers always require companies to provide UL/ETL certification?

1. The entire U.S. market places great emphasis on product safety; both consumers and purchasing organizations prioritize products bearing the UL certification mark when making their selections.

2. When a product causes a fire within the United States and the cause is determined to be attributable to the product, local authorities will seek compensation from the UL or ETL certification bodies, rather than from the manufacturer.

3. All U.S. states offer subsidies for UL and ETL certifications, and tendering projects typically require the submission of UL and ETL certificates, as well as other relevant product certification documents.

4. With a history spanning more than 100 years, UL enjoys a deeply entrenched reputation for safety among both consumers and government authorities. Even if you do not sell your products directly to end consumers, intermediaries will still require UL certification marks to ensure strong market demand.

5. Across the United States, more than 40,000 governmental jurisdictions—federal, state, county, and municipal—recognize the UL/ETL certification mark.

6. Any electronic, electrical, mechanical, or electromechanical product bearing the UL/ETL mark indicates that it has met the minimum requirements of widely recognized U.S. and Canadian product safety standards. It has been tested to comply with the relevant safety standards and signifies that the manufacturing facility agrees to undergo rigorous periodic inspections to ensure consistent product quality, thereby enabling the product to be sold in both the U.S. and Canadian markets.
